F2’s, Junior’s and Veteran’s 2012 – Broxtowe – Report by Ashley Caunt

First thing Saturday morning and everyone was having a look at the track, the layout looked very fast with several areas that although didn’t look too trick at first glance, we sure to throw cars off left right and centre.

The weather was a perfect start for a good weekends racing and everyone was eager to start the days racing.

After practice I was pleased with my Kyosho Vega, although I knew I had my work cut out to beat the likes of Connor Cocker, Jack Neal and Kyle Moon.

As the day progressed through the qualifying stages I managed to string together a few good results to secure myself the TQ spot going into the 3 leg A finals. Despite being TQ I knew that to win the meeting would still be a challenge with a hard charging Connor Cocker chasing from the off.

Connor walked away with the win in leg 1 which I knew had given him a big advantage going into the final 2 legs. The pressure was on!

Leg 2 started out with some very close battling but as the race progressed other drivers made several silly errors allowing me to drive away to victory and a single point in the leg.

The battle was on as we progressed into leg 3, I drove my heart out but there was nothing I could do in order to catch the extremely quick Connor Cocker, he took the leg giving him 2 leg wins and 1st place overall, I settled with 2nd and Kyle Moon finished a respectable 3rd!

It was also a good day for Kyosho in the veteran’s race, Tony Evdoka with his Kyosho DB1 drove and excellent set of finals to take the victory in the veteran’s class!

4WD

The track for 4WD was different to the previous day, not only was it altered it was also ran in the opposite direction which was sure to eliminate any driver advantage from the day before.
The day again started out dry, surely we couldn’t have a completely dry weekend at a 1/10th off-road meeting?!

In practice my Kyosho Lazer ZX-5 FS2 felt pretty good on big bore shocks. I knew that once again I would have my work cut out in order to beat an extremely strong field of Under16 competitors.

As we went into qualifying something about me felt less confident than the previous day, I am usually the better driver with 2WD than 4WD so I wasn’t expecting big thing on the Sunday although I was still out to take the title.

I qualified in a poor 4th place and I knew that the 3 drivers in front of me on the grid; Jack Neal, Connor Cocker and Kyle Moon, were all extremely fast and consistent, the consistency was something I had been lacking all day.

Going into the first left of the finals and TQ man Jack Neal lead away the field, I pushed and pushed but it seemed that even with my best efforts I would have to settle for 3rd in the leg, Jack Neal took the win with Connor Cocker in 2nd.

In the second leg I again drove as hard as I could but minor errors continued to let me down. Young Kyle Moon was left to take this leg with Connor Cocker getting another 2nd in round; I now had two 3rd’s.

Heading into leg 3 I think the majority of people had completely ruled me out of taking the win, even I had to be honest. With two 3rd’s there was surely no way I could take the meeting.
Jack Neal led us all away for the third and final time but he made a mistake early on, I made my way past Kyle Moon and went on a charge to catch the incredibly quick Connor Cocker. I caught Conner around a minute into the race and for the next 4 minutes neither of us we’re to make an error, it was simply unreal, I kept telling myself that sooner or later he would have to make a mistake but it just didn’t happen! 3 laps from the end, after analysing Connor’s driving whilst following for the race, I noticed his weak point was the small grass section just before the loop; I tried to pass on the inside but struggled to get the power down and had to back out. The next lap I tried again but I did not want to risk receiving a penalty so again I backed out, it had all come down to the final lap! I followed Connor for the entire lap knowing in my head that it was now or never! When we reached the grass corner just before the loop I knew I had to go for it, I threw my Lazer in tight on the grass and to my amazement and the amazement of everyone watching I had made it stick, I launched my car over the line to take the victory by just 0.12 of a second!

To the amazement of everyone, I had taken 1st postion in the meeting! With scores of a 1 and a 3 counting the only person joint with me was Kyle Moon, however with my faultless last leg my 1 was quicker giving me the win overall!

As you can see, I was extremely happy with my result!
